Therapeutic Services

Individual Therapy

Our clinicians offer psychotherapeutic services for children six years old and older, teens, and adults. We employ a variety of treatment methods, but pull heavily from cognitive-behavioral, narrative, and solution-focused strategies. We work hard to empower our clients to create their own treatment goals as partners with their clinicians.

Couples Therapy

We provide couples therapy for those who wish to remain together and increase their relationship satisfaction as well as for those couples who wish to end their relationship but want to separate as smoothly as possible and in a way that reduces conflict.

Discernment Counseling

Discernment counseling is a branch of couples counseling appropriate when partners are on the brink of separation or divorce. By agreeing to engage in a few sessions, couples will discover whether the relationship issues can be fixed.

Group Therapy

We offer a variety of group therapy options surrounding divorce and separation. We have groups targeted to children and teens (from elementary school through high school) as well as groups directed to adults. Contact us at admin@sdfsmass.com for more information.

Family Therapy

During family therapy, we partner with the family and engage each family member to develop new skills through psychoeducation, build support networks, boost a sense of competence, and improve communication. We believe in building upon a family’s unique strengths to create an environment in which each member can thrive. Over the course of family therapy, we conduct a comprehensive assessment of the family’s assets, needs, and challenges. A family’s personalized therapeutic program may include individual therapy, couples’ therapy, parenting coaching, and/or meeting with members of the family in various combinations of members.

Family Therapy and Parent-child Contact Problems (“reunification therapy”)

This type of family therapy is commonly referred to as “reunification therapy” but this description fails to address the familial and environmental systems that are often needed to reduce parent-child contact problems. Beginning with the parents, our clinicians will discuss the parent-child contact problems with both parents individually and jointly before therapy will progress to including the children and, sometimes, other family members. “Reunification therapy” often requires a court order and attorneys or parties interested in this type of therapy are encouraged to contact our practice before appointing one of our clinicians to ensure that we are available and to include our service agreement in the Court order.

Therapeutic Parenting Time

Therapeutic Parenting Time (TPT) is available to families that require therapeutic intervention to have successful parenting time. Clinicians in this service are interactive with families as they facilitate conversation, engagement in activities, provide parent education/redirection and promote attachment during sessions. Clinicians partner with parents and children to engage in positive parent/child interactions, communicate, set boundaries and re-establish connection. In TPT, we identify the client as the child(ren), so that the parent will be a collateral in the process, who receives feedback and psycho-educational information to better understand the child’s needs and the ways in which the parent can improve his/her parenting practices.  TPT may be court ordered, but it is not required. However, it is required that there be agreement (or order) on the number of TPT sessions or when TPT sessions should terminate.

Stepfamily Therapy

Stepfamily dynamics can often be challenging and our clinicians can provide the guidance and support needed to navigate these relationships. Stepfamilies have dynamics unique to them due to the various roles including biological parent, stepparent, biological sibling, and stepsibling. These new relationships and roles can cause growing pains and we can help you to create a successful blended family.
